Chervil - Seeds
Anthriscus cerefolium, commonly known as chervil or garden chervil, is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is native to Europe and southwestern Asia and is cultivated in many parts of the world for its delicate, aromatic leaves, which are used in cooking as a culinary herb.
Chervil is an annual plant that grows to a height of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. It has slender, erect stems, compound leaves, and small white umbel-shaped flowers that appear at the top of the plant. While its flowers are small and not particularly showy, they are attractive to pollinating insects.
The leaves of chervil are highly characteristic, consisting of very fine, light green leaflets. They have a mild and delicate flavor, similar to that of parsley but with a subtle hint of anise. The leaves are primarily used fresh, as their flavor diminishes significantly when dried. They are added to a variety of dishes, such as salads, soups, sauces, marinades, and fish and poultry dishes. Chervil is also used as a garnish to decorate plates due to its appealing appearance.
When it comes to cultivation, chervil prefers well-drained, fertile soil and thrives best in areas with partial shade. It is a cool-season plant and can be sensitive to excessive heat. It can be propagated from seeds sown in spring or autumn, and seedlings typically emerge within a few weeks. Chervil can also be grown in pots or containers, making it suitable for small gardens or those without garden space.
