Angelica is a striking biennial herb, often reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in height. It develops large, bright-green leaves and produces impressive rounded umbels of yellowish-green flowers that draw in numerous pollinators. Highly ornamental, it adds height and structure to any garden. Its fresh, subtly sweet scent gives the plant a unique character and makes it a favorite among aromatic species.

Traditionally, various parts of the plant have been used to flavor culinary preparations and beverages, and in some regions the stems are candied as a confection. It is also valued for attracting beneficial insects and enriching garden biodiversity.

How to sow Angelica archangelica seeds

For best results, seeds should be cold-stratified before sowing. Place them in moistened vermiculite or sand inside a sealed plastic bag and store in the refrigerator at 4 °C for 4 to 6 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds very shallowly in a seed tray, covering them with only a thin layer of substrate (0.2‑0.5 cm) and keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually occurs within 15‑20 days at cool temperatures of 10‑18 °C. Transplant to the final location, spacing plants 60‑80 cm apart, in light shade in warm climates or full sun in cooler regions. Direct sowing in autumn or winter is also possible, taking advantage of natural cold, but cold stratification provides greater control and higher success rates.
