Artemisia annua, or sweet wormwood, is an annual plant with an upright growth habit, usually unbranched or with minimal branching. Its alternate leaves have glands that release a pleasant camphor-like fragrance. The flowers, which are hermaphroditic, are grouped in small heads of 2–3 mm.

Additional information and recommendations

In some people, contact with Artemisia annua can cause allergic skin reactions, especially due to its pollen. When grown in poor soils with good drainage, the plant tends to be more long-lasting, resilient, and aromatic. It is also used as a flavouring in liqueurs (vermouth). The leaves are harvested in summer before the plant flowers, and then dried.
