Perennial root asclepias from which straight stems of one meter high sprout that end up beautiful and abundant clusters of bright yellow flowers. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Asclepias tuberosa 'Hello Yellow' is a charming bright yellow-flowered variety of the well-known North American perennial. This plant stands out not only for its stunning blooms but also for its ability to attract wildlife and brighten any sunny space with its golden energy. Unlike the standard orange-flowered type, 'Hello Yellow' produces dense clusters of golden-yellow flowers that bring warmth and vibrancy to the garden.
From its thick, tuberous roots emerge upright stems that can grow up to 90–100 cm tall. At the top of each stem, clusters of star-shaped flowers bloom through much of the summer. Their light, sweet fragrance is not only delightful to humans but also irresistible to pollinators like butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds in suitable regions.
Like other Asclepias species, 'Hello Yellow' plays a role in supporting Monarch butterflies, offering nectar to adults, though it’s not typically the preferred species for egg-laying. It is ideal for pollinator gardens, naturalized spaces, rock gardens, and sunny borders. Easy to grow and care for, it is drought-tolerant, non-invasive, and adapts well to a range of well-drained soils.
One of the special features of 'Hello Yellow' is that it does not produce milky sap, unlike many other Asclepias species, making it a cleaner choice for ornamental settings. Its thick roots store water and nutrients, giving it excellent drought resistance once established.
