Fennel is a vigorous perennial that can grow up to 1.5 or even 2 meters tall. It features upright, highly branched stems topped with delicate thread-like leaves that give the plant a graceful, airy look. In late summer it produces umbels of small yellow flowers that attract many beneficial pollinators. After flowering, it forms aromatic seeds widely used in cooking.

It is a tough and adaptable species, thriving even in poorer soils as long as drainage is good. It is especially valuable in organic gardens due to its ability to attract helpful insects. In ornamental beds, it adds height, movement and a distinctly Mediterranean feel.

How to sow Foeniculum vulgare seeds

Sow seeds in spring, either in a tray or directly outdoors, covering them with a thin layer of substrate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged and aim for temperatures between 15 and 20 °C to support germination, which usually occurs within 10-20 days. Once the seedlings have grown enough, transplant them spacing 30-50 cm apart, in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Direct sowing is highly effective, though starting in trays offers greater control.
