Passiflora princeps - Seeds
Passiflora princeps
Tropical climbing vine with vivid red flowers, highly ornamental and attractive to pollinators, ideal for warm climates and sunny spots.
Passiflora princeps, commonly known as the red passionflower, is a tropical vine native to Brazil. It features striking, star-shaped red flowers that stand out beautifully against its dark green foliage. It blooms profusely during the warmer months, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. The plant can reach several meters in length and needs a support structure such as a trellis, fence, or pergola. It thrives in warm, humid conditions but can also be grown in containers indoors or in greenhouses. This exotic species adds a vibrant tropical touch to any garden.
How to sow Passiflora princeps seeds
Before sowing, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 to 48 hours to soften their hard outer coat. Sow them in a light, well-draining medium such as a mix of peat and perlite, keeping it consistently moist but not waterlogged. Maintain a temperature between 22 °C and 28 °C for optimal germination. Seeds may take 3 to 8 weeks or longer to sprout. Once seedlings reach about 10 cm tall, transplant them carefully into individual pots. Provide warmth, light, and patience, as germination can be slow and uneven.
