Euphorbia, Mountain Snow - Seeds
Euphorbia marginata Mountain Snow
Striking annual ornamental plant with green foliage edged in brilliant white, creating an elegant snow-like effect in flower beds, borders and floral arrangements.
Mountain Snow Euphorbia (Euphorbia marginata 'Mountain Snow') is an annual ornamental plant belonging to the spurge family, native to North America and grown for its remarkable variegated foliage. Its most distinctive feature is the development of broad white margins on the upper leaves and bracts, creating a beautiful contrast against the surrounding green foliage.
With an upright, branching habit, plants typically reach 50-80 cm in height, forming airy, well-structured clumps. As summer progresses, the white markings become increasingly prominent, giving the foliage an appearance reminiscent of freshly fallen snow. The actual flowers are small and inconspicuous, surrounded by the showy bracts.
This variety is particularly attractive in summer flower beds, mixed borders, naturalistic gardens and mass plantings, where its white foliage provides brightness and contrast alongside colourful flowering plants. It is also valued as decorative foliage for floral arrangements.
It thrives in full sun and light, fertile, well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought and requires relatively little maintenance.
Caution: Like other members of the Euphorbia genus, this plant contains a milky white sap that may irritate the skin and eyes. Wear gloves when handling and avoid ingestion.
How to sow the seeds
Sow indoors in late winter or spring, or directly outdoors once all danger of frost has passed.
Sow the seeds approximately 3-5 mm deep in a light, well-drained growing medium. Maintain temperatures around 18-22 °C and keep the substrate moderately moist without waterlogging. Germination usually occurs within 10-21 days, although it may be irregular.
Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into their final growing position, spacing plants approximately 25-35 cm apart. Grow in full sun and avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisation, which can encourage overly vigorous vegetative growth.
