Flamboyant - Seeds
Delonix regia
Flamboyán or Madagascar frambayan is a very colorful tree, with large red or orange flowers and bright green leaves. On average it reaches 8 meters and provides a wide and dense shadow.
Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia) is a tropical tree native to Madagascar and widely regarded as one of the most spectacular flowering ornamental trees. It develops a broad, spreading, umbrella-shaped crown with large bipinnate leaves composed of numerous tiny leaflets, giving the foliage a delicate, fern-like appearance.
Its greatest attraction is its remarkable flowering display. Large red to orange-red flowers can cover much of the crown, producing a striking contrast against the green foliage. Flowering is followed by distinctive long, woody seed pods containing numerous seeds.
It is relatively fast growing under favourable conditions and is particularly suited to large gardens in tropical, subtropical and very warm Mediterranean climates. Plenty of sunshine and warmth encourage vigorous growth and flowering. Young trees are particularly sensitive to frost, so container cultivation can be useful where winter protection is required.
How to sow the seeds
The seeds have a very hard, water-resistant coat that causes physical dormancy. Before sowing, lightly scarify the seed coat, for example by carefully sanding a small area without damaging the inner seed. Then soak the seeds in lukewarm water for approximately 12-24 hours; successfully scarified seeds will usually swell as they absorb water.
Sow approximately 1-2 cm deep in a light, aerated and very well-drained growing medium. Keep at a warm temperature, ideally around 22-28 °C, and maintain the substrate slightly moist but never waterlogged. Properly scarified seeds generally germinate relatively quickly. Keep young seedlings in a very bright position and gradually acclimatise them to direct sunlight.
