Threeleaf akebia - Seeds
Akebia trifoliata
Akebia trifoliata, known as threeleaf akebia, is a vigorous and hardy climbing vine that flowers in spring with numerous pleasantly scented purplish-brown blooms. Its foliage and climbing habit make it useful for covering light garden structures.
It is an interesting choice for pergolas, fences, trellises and naturalistic plantings. With suitable support, it can add texture, seasonal flowers and light screening to the garden.
For sowing, use a loose, well-drained medium and maintain regular moisture during the early stage. Germination in woody climbers can sometimes be uneven, so sow with patience and protect the seed tray from drying out, excessive heat and severe cold.
Once established, young plants should receive good light and moderate watering. Guide the stems onto a support early and use light formative pruning if needed to keep growth orderly. In very hot climates, some protection from the strongest sun may be beneficial.
