Strawberry spinach - Seeds
Blitum virgatum
Blitum virgatum, commonly known as strawberry spinach, is an edible annual plant that occurs naturally in mountainous regions. It is grown for its young leaves, which can be used as a leafy vegetable, and for its small red fruits, which add ornamental interest.
It is a useful choice for home vegetable gardens, large containers and edible plant collections. Its annual growth cycle makes it easy to include in seasonal plantings, especially where both practical harvests and decorative value are welcome.
For sowing, prepare a loose, fertile and well-drained growing medium with regular moisture. Seeds can be started in trays or sown directly in their final position when conditions are mild. Cover the seeds lightly and keep the medium evenly moist without waterlogging.
Once established, plants appreciate good light and moderate watering. Young leaves can be harvested gradually so the plant can continue growing. As a general guide, avoiding extreme heat and prolonged drought helps maintain more tender foliage.
