Stilt palm - Seeds
Verschaffeltia splendida
Verschaffeltia splendida, the stilt palm, is an unusual palm native to the tropical forests of the Seychelles. Its most distinctive feature is the set of supporting roots around the base, giving the plant a sculptural and highly recognizable form.
This species is particularly appealing to collectors of tropical palms and to warm, humid gardens. Coming from a tropical forest environment, it appreciates sheltered conditions, good light without excessive stress, and a stable growing setup.
For sowing, use an airy, moisture-retentive medium with good drainage. Keep the seeds warm and protected, maintaining even moisture without allowing the mix to become stagnant. As with many tropical palms, germination may require patience, so avoid frequent disturbance.
Young plants should be protected from cold, harsh direct sun and dry air. A greenhouse, propagator or very bright indoor space can be useful while seedlings establish and gain strength.
