Basil, Dark Opal - Seeds
Ocimum basilicum Dark Opal
Basil variety with deep purple aromatic leaves, perfect for herb gardens, containers and ornamental displays.
'Dark Opal' is a striking variety of Ocimum basilicum, renowned for its deep purple foliage that creates a dramatic contrast in herb gardens, borders and containers. Its leaves have the characteristic basil fragrance with a slightly richer flavour than traditional green-leaved varieties.
Besides its ornamental appeal, the fresh leaves are widely used to flavour salads, pasta, pizzas, sauces and many other dishes. During summer, the plant produces spikes of small pink to violet flowers that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
This fast-growing variety thrives in full sun, fertile well-drained soil and moderate watering.
How to sow the seeds
Sow the seeds in spring after the danger of frost has passed, either in trays or directly outdoors. Place them on a light growing medium and cover with a thin layer of soil. Keep the substrate lightly moist and place the seed tray in a warm, bright location.
Seeds usually germinate within 7-14 days at temperatures between 20 and 25 °C. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them approximately 25-30 cm apart.
