Deciduous tree or shrub with showy orange-red flowers and ornamental fruits, highly valued in Mediterranean gardens and orchards.

Seed packet size

Punica granatum, commonly known as pomegranate, is a fruit-bearing species cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region since ancient times. It can grow as a shrub or small tree and offers ornamental interest for much of the year. Its glossy foliage, vibrant orange-red flowers and distinctive fruits make it an attractive addition to both gardens and orchards.

During summer, the plant produces striking blooms that later develop into round pomegranates with tough outer skins. Once established, it is notably drought tolerant and particularly well suited to warm, sunny climates.

Its compact habit, longevity and ease of cultivation have made the pomegranate one of the most iconic fruit trees of Mediterranean landscapes.

How to sow the seeds

Clean the seeds thoroughly to remove any remaining pulp and allow them to dry for one or two days. Sow in spring in a fertile, well-drained substrate, covering them with about 1 cm of soil.

Keep the substrate slightly moist and place the seed tray in a warm, bright location. Germination usually occurs within 2 to 6 weeks. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or their final growing position.
