Cinchona officinalis
Tropical tree with dense foliage and pink flowers, known for its quinine-rich bark.
Cinchona pubescens is a South American tree that can reach substantial height in suitable climates. It features large, oval, slightly hairy leaves with deep green coloration. Its pink to reddish flowers appear in showy clusters and can be mildly fragrant.
The species is widely known for its bark, from which quinine is extracted — historically used in the treatment of malaria. It prefers tropical to mild temperate climates, with good humidity and fertile, well-drained soil. Under favorable conditions, it shows vigorous growth.
It is mainly cultivated as an ornamental or botanical specimen tree.
⚠️ Medicinal use of the bark should only be undertaken under professional supervision.
