Onion, Early Valencian short-day - Seeds
Allium cepa
Very early short-day onion variety with conical bulbs and straw-yellow skin, ideal for early harvests and short-term storage.
The Early Valencian short-day onion is a traditional variety valued for its ability to mature well ahead of other onions, allowing harvests around mid-May. Its bulbs have the characteristic conical shape, straw-yellow skin, and an average weight of about 140 g. It is intended for fresh use and has a storage period of roughly two months after harvest. It performs well in mild climates and requires short-day conditions to form proper bulbs.
How to sow Early Valencian short-day onion seeds
Sow the seeds in trays or seedbeds from late autumn to early winter, using a loose, well-drained substrate. Keep moderate moisture during germination, which typically takes 7 to 14 days at temperatures between 15 and 20 °C. Once seedlings have 2 to 3 true leaves, transplant them into the ground, spacing plants 10-15 cm apart. This variety forms bulbs under short-day conditions and mild temperatures, making it ideal for warm regions where it can develop early and provide an advanced harvest.
