Velvet tamarind - Seeds
Dialium cochinchinense
Dialium cochinchinense, commonly known as velvet tamarind, is a tropical tree valued for its fruits, which have a velvety surface and yellowish sweet pulp described as similar in flavour to tamarind. It is an appealing species for growers interested in less common tropical fruit trees.
As a tropical tree from seed, it should be started in a deep, loose, well-drained medium that can hold some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Warm, bright, protected conditions are helpful for seedling establishment. In cooler climates, container culture in a greenhouse or sheltered warm space is usually the more practical approach.
Before sowing, make sure the seeds are clean and place them in a stable medium. Water moderately and consistently, allowing air to remain available around the roots. Woody tropical species may germinate unevenly, so patience is important and the seed tray should not be abandoned too quickly.
Over time, Dialium cochinchinense may require space to develop a tree-like habit and a strong root system. It is best suited to growers with patience, suitable conditions, and an interest in unusual tropical fruiting species.
