Black mulberry - Seeds
Morus nigra
Deciduous tree with a broad canopy and dark ornamental fruits, valued for shade and landscape appeal.
Morus nigra, commonly known as black mulberry, is a moderately growing fruit tree that can live for many decades. It develops a dense, rounded canopy that provides excellent shade during warm weather, making it a popular choice for large gardens and outdoor spaces.
Its leaves are large, textured and deep green, while the fruits gradually change from reddish tones to a rich dark purple when mature. The combination of abundant foliage and attractive fruits gives the tree considerable ornamental value.
It is a hardy and adaptable species that thrives in a wide range of well-drained soils. Once established, it tolerates heat, drought and winter cold very well.
How to sow the seeds
Clean the seeds thoroughly to remove any remaining pulp and allow them to dry briefly. For improved germination, cold stratify them for 60 to 90 days in a slightly moist medium at approximately 4 °C.
After stratification, sow the seeds in a fertile, well-drained substrate and cover them lightly. Keep the growing medium consistently moist but not waterlogged and place the seed tray in a bright location. Germination usually occurs over several weeks, depending on temperature and seed freshness.
