African bowstring hemp - Seeds
Dracaena hyacinthoides
Dracaena hyacinthoides, often associated with the name Sansevieria and also known as African bowstring hemp, is an architectural plant with firm, upright leaves. Its strong form makes it attractive for succulent collections and ornamental container growing.
The source description notes the plant’s fibres, which explains the bowstring hemp common name. In cultivation it is appreciated for its tolerance of relatively dry conditions once established, although young seedlings need more careful moisture management.
How to sow African bowstring hemp seeds
Sow the seeds in a mineral or very well-drained medium that is lightly moist, avoiding dense mixes that hold too much water. Keep the seed tray warm and bright, out of strong direct sun until seedlings are established.
Water moderately, allowing the medium to lose some moisture between waterings. As the plants grow, increase light gradually and transplant to individual pots when they are large enough to handle.
