Marina di Chioggia Pumpkin - Seeds
Cucurbita maxima
Traditional Italian pumpkin with large knobbly grey-green fruits and exceptionally sweet orange flesh, ideal for a wide range of recipes.
Marina di Chioggia is a traditional Italian heirloom variety originating from the Veneto region, renowned for its distinctive appearance and outstanding eating quality. It produces flattened, round pumpkins with characteristic grey-green skin covered in pronounced knobbly bumps, making the fruits highly ornamental.
This late-maturing variety produces fruits weighing up to 5 kg, filled with firm, deep orange flesh that is naturally sweet and full of flavour. It is excellent for soups, purées, stews, roasting, baking and many other dishes, and can be enjoyed fresh or cooked.
Its vigorous growth and reliable productivity make it an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens with plenty of sunshine and space.
How to sow the seeds
For an earlier harvest, start seeds indoors in individual pots during spring and transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Seeds may also be sown directly into the ground once the soil has warmed sufficiently.
Sow the seeds 2-3 cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged and grow in full sun. Germination usually occurs within 7-14 days under warm conditions.
