Early and productive spring onion variety with long, thick white stems and tender, mild-flavoured leaves, ideal for fresh use.

White Lisbon, also known as Witte van Lissabon, is an early and productive variety of Allium cepa grown mainly for its long white stems and tender green leaves. Unlike onions cultivated for mature bulbs, this variety is harvested young and does not develop a large, rounded bulb.

Its growing period is approximately 50-60 days, making it an excellent choice for quick and successive harvests. The whole plant can be eaten and is ideal for salads, soups, stir-fries, omelettes and many other dishes requiring a fresh and mild onion flavour.

It can be grown outdoors, in greenhouses or under protective covers. In mild climates, it may also be sown in autumn to provide an early harvest at the beginning of spring.

How to sow White Lisbon Spring Onion seeds

Sow directly outdoors or in seed trays from late winter through spring. In regions with mild winters, the seeds may also be sown in autumn for an earlier crop. Plant them approximately 0.5-1 cm deep in fertile, loose and well-drained soil, keeping the ground evenly moist without waterlogging.

Germination usually occurs within 7-14 days under mild temperatures. Thin the young plants to around 3-5 cm apart once they begin to develop. Lightly earthing up the base during growth can encourage longer white stems.
