Wisteria sinensis is a vigorous deciduous climber renowned for its breathtaking hanging flower clusters that appear in spring. The blooms, usually lilac to violet in colour, often cover the plant before or as the foliage emerges, creating one of the most dramatic floral displays in the garden.

Throughout the growing season, it develops lush foliage composed of elegant green leaflets. With age, the plant forms beautifully twisted trunks and woody stems that add year-round ornamental interest. It is ideal for covering pergolas, arches, walls and other large structures.

This long-lived species is cold hardy and provides excellent natural shade during summer.

How to sow the seeds

To improve germination, soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before sowing. Then sow them in a light, well-drained substrate and cover with a thin layer of soil.

Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged and place the seed tray in a warm, bright location. Germination usually occurs within 2 to 6 weeks. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots to encourage strong root development.
