Panax ginseng
Panax ginseng is a legendary plant from East Asia, known for its powerful root and slow growth in cool, shaded forests. Its modest appearance hides centuries of tradition and value in gardens with a wild soul.
Panax ginseng is a perennial plant native to the cool, shaded forests of East Asia, where it has been revered for centuries by various cultures. Its growth is slow and delicate, making it a special species for those who value patience and a deep connection with nature.
It reaches a modest height, with star-shaped compound leaves and small greenish flowers that give way to bright red fruits. However, the true treasure lies underground: its fleshy, branching root, a symbol of strength and balance.
Ideal for growing in cool, damp gardens with partial shade, Panax ginseng brings a mystical and serene atmosphere to any green space. It’s a demanding but rewarding species, perfect for those seeking plants with history and character.
How to sow ginseng seeds
Ginseng requires well-drained soil rich in organic matter and slightly acidic. It should be planted in a shaded, cool area, as the plant does not tolerate excessive heat. Prepare the soil by keeping it moist but not waterlogged, and ensure it is well-aerated.
Panax ginseng seeds need to undergo a cold stratification process. Place the seeds in a bag with moss or damp soil and store it in the fridge at 4-5°C for 2-3 months. Then, plant the seeds about 2-3 cm deep in the spring, keeping a distance of 15-20 cm between them.
Germination is slow, taking between 18 months and 2 years to occur. During this time, make sure to keep the soil moist and free of weeds.
