Strawberry tree - Seeds
Arbutus unedo
Evergreen shrub or small tree with red ornamental fruits and autumn flowering, characteristic of Mediterranean landscapes.
Arbutus unedo, commonly known as the strawberry tree, is an evergreen species native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe. It grows as a large shrub or small tree with a dense crown and glossy dark-green leaves that remain attractive throughout the year.
One of its most distinctive features is its ability to carry flowers and fruits at the same time. Clusters of white bell-shaped flowers appear in autumn and winter, while the round fruits gradually ripen to bright red or orange colours, creating a highly ornamental display.
It is a hardy and adaptable species, well suited to Mediterranean gardens, natural hedges and ecological restoration projects. Once established, it tolerates drought well and grows successfully in full sun or partial shade.
How to sow the seeds
Arbutus unedo seeds usually benefit from 4 to 8 weeks of cold stratification before sowing. After this treatment, sow them in a light, fertile and well-drained substrate, covering them lightly.
Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged and place the seed tray in a bright location. Germination can be slow and irregular, usually occurring within 4 to 12 weeks. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into individual pots.
