Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is an upright annual plant growing 40-60 cm tall. It has finely divided green leaves giving it a delicate, airy appearance. In summer, it produces umbels of small white flowers highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. After flowering, it forms aromatic seeds known as “anise seeds,” widely used in cooking, baking, and beverages.

It is a hardy plant that adapts to light, well-drained soil and full sun. Its cultivation is straightforward if light and moisture needs are respected, making it ideal for both herb gardens and ornamental plantings, adding aroma and color with its foliage and flowers.

How to sow Pimpinella anisum seeds

Sow seeds directly outdoors in spring in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant them shallowly, covering lightly with substrate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and provide mild temperatures for germination, which usually occurs within 7-14 days. Once seedlings have several true leaves, thin them to 20-30 cm apart to allow optimal growth and seed production.
