Annual or perennial plant with large palmate leaves and decorative globular fruits, highly ornamental for gardens and large containers.

Ricinus communis is a fast-growing plant that can reach several meters in height in a single season. Its large, glossy palmate leaves and often reddish stems make it visually striking. It produces small flowers and decorative globular fruits that mature into spiny capsules.

It is mainly grown for ornamental purposes, adding height and structure to gardens and open spaces. Prefers fertile, well-drained soils, full sun, and regular watering. All parts of the plant are highly toxic if ingested, so it should be kept away from children and pets.

How to sow Ricinus communis seeds

Sow seeds directly in trays or in their final position after the risk of frost has passed. Soaking seeds in lukewarm water for a few hours can improve germination. Plant in a light, well-drained substrate, covering seeds lightly. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually occurs in 7-14 days. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them leaving sufficient space for the plant to reach its characteristic height and spread.
