Jujube - Seeds
Ziziphus jujuba
Deciduous tree or shrub that produces sweet, edible fruits known as jujubes or Chinese dates, valued for its hardiness and ornamental appeal.
Ziziphus jujuba, commonly known as jujube or Chinese date, is a small tree native to Asia that can grow between 3 and 8 m tall. It has thorny branches, glossy green leaves, and round to oval fruits that ripen to reddish tones and become sweet when dried. The species is highly drought-tolerant and adaptable to many soil types, provided they are well-drained. It prefers warm, sunny conditions and can tolerate light frost. Beyond its fruit production, it is also appreciated as an ornamental plant for its form and foliage.
How to sow Ziziphus jujuba seeds
Ziziphus jujuba seeds have a very hard shell that should be lightly scarified or carefully cracked to improve germination. Afterwards, soak them in warm water for 24 to 48 hours. For dried or stored seeds, cold stratification is recommended for 1 to 2 months at around 4 °C, after soaking them for 2 to 3 days and changing the water several times. Sow the seeds in a light, well-drained substrate and keep a daytime temperature of about 25 °C. Germination is slow and irregular, often taking several weeks or even months.
