Rough tree fern - Seeds
Cyathea australis
Cyathea australis, commonly known as rough tree fern, is an impressive tree fern associated with moist, shaded forests. It develops a fibrous upright trunk and a crown of large fronds, giving gardens and plant collections a lush, ancient character.
This species is well suited to growers who enjoy slow, careful propagation and can provide humidity, shelter and filtered light. According to the source description, it is hardy to around -10 °C, although young plants should still be protected from severe frost, drying winds and sudden changes.
How to sow rough tree fern seeds
Fern seeds are very fine spores and need cleanliness, steady moisture and patience. Sow them on the surface of a fine, moist, sterilized growing medium, without burying them deeply, and keep the container in bright shade rather than direct sun.
A clear cover or propagator can help maintain humidity, with occasional ventilation to reduce fungal problems. Once prothalli and later small fern plants appear, acclimatize them gradually and transplant only when they are large enough to handle safely.
