Antirrhinum majus
Popular ornamental plant with colourful flower spikes, perfect for bringing long-lasting colour to gardens and containers.
Antirrhinum majus is one of the most widely grown ornamental plants in Mediterranean gardens, valued for its abundant and eye-catching blooms. Native to the Mediterranean region, it occurs naturally from Spain across to Turkey and neighbouring areas.
The plant produces elegant flower spikes packed with distinctive blooms whose shape resembles the mouth of a dragon, giving rise to the common name snapdragon. This seed mix contains a wide range of flower colours, including red, pink, yellow, white, orange and other vibrant shades that create striking displays in borders and flower beds.
Its long flowering season and easy cultivation make it an excellent choice for gardens, containers and window boxes. The flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
How to sow the seeds
Sow seeds in trays using a light, well-drained growing medium. As the seeds are very small, simply press them gently onto the surface without covering them deeply. Keep the substrate consistently moist and place the tray in a bright location with temperatures between 15 and 20 °C.
Germination usually occurs within 10-20 days. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them leaving approximately 20-30 cm between plants. They perform best in sunny or lightly shaded positions with fertile, well-drained soil.
